Eduardo S. gave me this cane on Monday August 3rd, 2009.

Eduardo S. :

I see this object and it’s something strange. I am going to give you this cane that represents a change of skin in my life, like a snake. After living an agitated life in my youth, doing extreme sports, skateboarding, I had a problem; a spinal disc herniation that brought me to a very complicated surgery that almost left me in a wheelchair.

It was hard both psychologically, physically and economically, because it was a very expensive surgery. It was difficult in every aspects; with my family, with the money, and all these things. There was a 6 months recovery that included going to swim everyday, going to electro-magnetic therapy, UV rays, X rays. In the beginning, I came out in a wheelchair and when I could walk, this cane is what I used for 6 months.

Now I am giving it away and this is more or less the history. There are a lot of things to say about the background of this, something between the lines. It was strange because I was skateboarding for 8 years until this accident happened. It seems good in the end because it brought me to study at the university, to develop my career and to do other kind of things. It’s good, because a lot of people that I use to skate with are not doing anything at all today. I changed friends; I changed my life. Mi life made a 360 degrees turn. This is what I mean when I talk about the change of skin of a snake. I left everything, friends, parties with the same kind of friends, everything. I started to pay attention to school, in other type of people, in something healthier. It represents another life: The before and after the cane. It’s like a line. Ok, I give it away. Let’s go on now! This is the little history.

This is a document that is very hard to give away. It describes the first symptoms and one month later, I had the surgery. The date is January 15th, 2001. I was 20 years old at that moment. My surgery was done at the Hospital Central Militar with an excellent orthopaedic surgeon named Tipac. This is the document that I found, and I will also give it to you. It like making a little resume of the history of the object that I am going to give you.

As we were searching for Eduardo's house, I learned that street numbers in Mexico City are not always in the right order.

After the meeting, Eduardo suggested that we took a group picture along with the object. Eduardo sent me the picture by email in the evening. From left to right: Eduardo, me, the cane, Ramiro.
